Spring Clean Your Webinar
On this first day of spring, I thought I would take the opportunity to approach a topic that has been a thorn in my side: If you produce “How-to” videos, Webinars, Podcasts, or Online Training courses of any type, here is a little advice: Weed out the crap! People tune-in to you because they want information. We are all strapped for time, and honestly could care less about where you went to school, your various degrees, the 7 books you’ve written, your famous clients, why you thought “today’s topic” was essential, and especially – the 5 things you’re going to cover when you eventually get over yourself. I watch a lot of webinars. I constantly research the latest software, plugins, widgets, and any feature that makes my life – or that of my clients – more efficient. This requires viewing numerous videos to understand features and compare them apples to apples. Then, when I do make a purchase, I watch training videos because I need visuals. I tune into relationship counselors often, and I follow certain podcasts to stay current with social media. I can no longer tolerate the 10-minute introductions about the host or instructor just to get to the nugget of information another 20 minutes into it. If I want to know your expertise on the topic, I will do a search and if it’s that important to you, I’m sure I’ll find it on your “About Me” page of your website. As we dig out of winter and head toward warmer weather, I wish us all success for growth. If you wish to gain more followers, sell more products, and become the authority in your industry, keep your topics hot. Start with a bang, stay on course, and keep it as short as possible. This keeps me looking forward to your next segment. If you want to sell me something, put it at the end, or embed a link, or even in a follow-up email. I’m fine with that. If you start with your narcissistic self-promotion when I need information, I’m out and, most likely, won’t be back. Thanks for the opportunity to vent. Now, go enjoy this beautiful spring day!
